Hmm! from your description it sounds more like an addiction than a therapy.

Do you ever get the sound of your heart racing when you have seen the winning combination, or about to go in for the kill. Or the same when you make a blunder and hope your opponent will miss it.

I use to get a big adrenaline rush from playing in tournaments, and adrenaline is a good painkiller, so I guess it could help with pain :)

to hardcorepawn yes Chess can be and often is an addiction , Chess can be and often is ITS OWN CURE !! Quite a feat to be both the affliction and the cure!!! but then again Chess is the ultimate game!! answer to your questions -- yes to all of them ... yours bluebabygirl

... Alcohol does the same thing - here's to the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.

chess is......... a lot for me too! sure, it can cause and help a lot. Its a question of awarness, I think. When playing a match, there is much more involved, then only a chessboard and the pieces (f.i. the soul, the caracters of the players.....). So it can cause a lot and it can also be theraputic. I have a serious depression and I feel that chess helps me to find a way, to battle, not to give up, never to loose my hope! I also had bad chess experiences, that layed my mood down. But I thought "not with me" and then chess was something to help me to get out of my crisis. It helped me to train my patience, my soul, my hope, my way of thinking, my caracter, my imagination, simply a lot of things that are important in life too! My realationship to this game is very complicated, very beautiful, very complex and a lot more. I dont want to miss only one minute of it!!!!!

Addiction? Yes, it is an addiction, for me too! and its not a contradiction to the theraputic side, but an other aspect! So for me, chess is theraputic and also an addiction!!

chess can cause a lot, but its every players own decision to allow this! On the other side, chess can also help a lot and its every players' own job to find out how!

For me, Chess is one of the most beautiful, most difficult, most intensive and most helpful realationships, I ever had and still have. And: I LOVE IT...........

BBG beware,my young Padawan:close to the dark side of chess addiction you are slipping. This is a good game,a great game, but it can be a killer and a rui9ner in more ways than one. Don't let it become an obsession.

wow chess means a lot more to you guys than it does to me.. to me it's just an academic interest. i like finding a winning combination in chess as much as i like solving a math problem or getting a good grade on a test.

chess is life - Bobby Fischer I agree that chess can do some powerful things to your body. Back when I was playing in scholastic state OTB tournaments, after the final round, usually quite a while after, I would take my pulse and most of the time it was over 200!

BBG To me, chess is a great passion! Well, first I must admit, I am addicted to this game. But it is just not an addiction..... it is much more.

I see beauty in chess....... Chess is just a hobby, but then why am I trying to improve all the time? Because the more I improve, the more I will enjoy it!

Chess is Romantic!! There is beauty and love in it! As someone once beautifully told me. It is a war that can be used to spread peace around the world....... Two greatest od friends can fight the fiercest of battles! I have known two very close friends (very young boys) clash in many tournaments. On the board they are out to kill each other, no friendship nothing! But after the game, they are as if there was no battle!!

BBG, your firstpost is absolutely true! While it can relieve depression, it can also cause depression! (not exactly depression ;-) )

Chess is very close to Music for me. Till some time back, I used to say, chess is my alcohol! Actually they are very similar - alcohol, is also an addiction, but much more also! Chess i much better than alcohol though.......

One thing somehow I never agree with is that chess has something to do with mathematics or intellectual ability. Maybe there is some correlation, bt I find it a rather stupid assumpiton.

I surely cannot live without chess! The numerous possibilities bewilder me! There are many stories about this .....

It is probably one of Man's best creations!

Music, Wine, Women and Chess....
Make a Man powerless............

(Hey, dont infer too much about me from the above!) I dont necessarily agree completely with the above.

Finally, never forget, chess is just a game.

I have lots more to write! But maybe I should stop and wait for some response first.

invincible1 'chess is just a game'. That is sacrilege! Caissa will smite you mightily if you don't repent of your blasphemy. I vote to ban invincible1 until he can provide a note from his guardian stating that he has truely repented for this grievious sin, else he might spread this disease to others. Argh!!!
bodacious_1uk 10 ( +1 | -1 )
Yep... I've got exams currently and chess is just about the only thing that can relieve my stress!!!

bogg :-)
Well, I am not too much of a believer... Even if I want to be euphomistic I have to say I am agnostic.
Of course there is so much I dont understand. Conundrum is infinite and omnipresent. But to blanket that and start praying appears illogical to me.........
bogg 20 ( +1 | -1 )
invincible1 Ah, I see. Like the pagans of old you are supping at the table of foreign dieties! Caissa doesn't ask for your prayers, just for your love. May you find enlightenment soon, as with enlightenment comes true joy.
bluebabygirl 68 ( +1 | -1 )
to bogg your comments made me laugh til my sides hurt . and your second comments were great too. Caissa just told me she was about to smite him severely about the head and shoulders til he begged for mercy . she would make his knights refuse to gallop ,, his rooks refuse to lift ,, his pawns refuse to fork and his queen commit suicide !! But I begged her not . she granted him a temporary stay . his fate is in his own hands or rather head. I assured her he will see the light . to him I say -- young heathen bow down to her majesty ,, ask for her comfort and beg for her joy. Pray she bless you with TAL'S nerve and Fischer's technique. and never take her name in vain again. So goes my advice to you the unbeliever, yours bluebabygirl

Is it the ultimate mind game? Just a thought…

I think that chess is the only time you will ever play mind against mind with an opponent. Unlike a physical game when strength and speed are major factors, chess is purely mind against mind.

Strong will, regret, stubbornness, even levels of fear and anger come into play along with joy. Think of a silly move you’ve just made – remember the self-anger you probably felt. The fear of being within 2 or 3 moves of checkmating your opponent after a long and hard game and knowing that at any time he may destroy all your long and hard work.

Think of the regret of not moving a piece when you had the chance, only to find out that it later becomes your nemesis.

Yes, chess, for me, is a true mind to mind game. The pieces are merely extensions of your thoughts and emotions culminating when you move a piece.

The closest you will ever get to playing mind to mind is over a chess board.

many things ... Here's one nobody has mentioned yet.
Sometimes when life comes crashing down on you and all you think about are things you don't want to think about ( work, love, whatever ), you can turn to a game of chess. A game of chess will force the mind to "be here now" ... in the moment, not past or future. You must think of what you're doing to play the game. Just like that you're transformed into the present ... your troubles are gone for the time and you are in the present moment.
Alive!

Present Moment! It's a form of meditation! WOOOOOO!!! I find chess incredibly soothing. It cures what ailes me, no doubt.

As for mind vs. mind, chess is a good way to do that. But there are other ways that are equally rewarding. A good debate is one way. Or what about a good old boxing match? The minds are fighting each other with bodies. Then there is always introspection and contemplation: The mind versus itself, or versus God, depending on how crazy (or sane) you are, or how you look at it.
