Message: The Internet Chess Club (ICC) is one of the few sites where you must pay. Unlike gameknot, I had to actually give them my credit card and all that nonscence.
Anyways, does anyone here play there? Give your handle so we can play ;)
Also, do you guys think it was RIGHT for me to pay for a chess site (24,50 yr)? Do you believe in paying for chess sites?

Message: I believe that when others work hard to provide a service
that is both valuable and pleasurable, they deserve to be
paid for their time and effort. If you can't afford it, then so
be it, but if you enjoy the site and can afford the
reasonable cost of membership but continue to
freeload…then I think that is problematic.
This is just common sense and courtesy.

Message: i am VincentGlorioso . i got a student discount i think it is called. who are you? ——— The late Vasily Smyslov was the composed champion of the 1950s — Vasily Smyslov, who died last weekend at 89, was the world's best chess player for most of the 1950s but held the championship crown for only one year and was nicknamed 'The Winter King'. Smyslov understood chess more profoundly than his great rival Mikhail Botvinnik, against whom he contested three world championship matches with honours even. But Botvinnik was the better psychologist, had a shrewd knowledge of chess politics and made wily use of rules where 12-12 kept his title in 1954 and his 1957 defeat gave him a return series where he caught the flu-stricken Smyslov at the start. Smyslov took his major reverse phlegmatically. Chess for him was an art form allied to ...

Message: played there for 3 years, but not anymore.
IMHO ICC turned in to be pure commercial and it lost its feeling of a actual Chessclub. Besides it is not a site for playing CC-games. Most of the games played there are either Bullet or Blitz games.
After I found Gameknot, I have no need for playing on any other sites, this place here is simply the best. I signed up as a lifetime member, when Mike provided that possibility and I strongly urged other people to support this site by be a paying member!
Best wishes
Cairo ——— A glittering career — The 7th World Chess Champion Vasily Vasilyevich Smyslov (1921-2010) has died at the age of 89 in Moscow. He played four times for the world title including three matches against Mikhail Botvinnik. He won the title in 1957 and was one of the finest players in world chess for over 40 years. He remained an immensely strong chess player even into his 60s and was only eliminated from the world championship cycle by a young Garry Kasparov in 1984. Smyslov learnt the moves from his father, who was a very strong chess player, at the age of six and was schooled initially in endgames which doubtless led to his acknowledged mastery of this phase of the game. He became ...

Message: Probebly your rating on ICC was much lower than here and thats why you dont play there anymore? ——— European Chess Championship attracts huge field — The 11th European Chess Championship, which finished March 18 in Rijeka, Croatia, attracted a mammoth field of 408 chess players representing 41 European countries. A record 187 grandmasters competed. At stake were 23 places in the next World Cup, plus a prize fund of 120,000 Euros (about $163,000). Ian Nepomniachtchi, a 19-year-old Russian grandmaster ranked a mere 35th at the start despite his formidable 2656 rating, took first prize with an undefeated score of 9-2. Next were Baadur Jobava of Georgia and Artyom Timofeev of Russia, each 8 1/2 -2 1/2 . Veteran Pia Cramling of Sweden won the 158-player women's chess tournament, which ...

Message: is it a good question? i dont think a chessplayer plays for rating..u play for rating? and what is your problem against good players here?? ——— Can you keep up with the world's best? — It can be addictive following the Amber chess tournament - but what should Black do here? Carlsen-Smeets, Amber (Blindfold) 2010. How should Black play? RB Every now and then, when a deadline looms, I go and hole up in an attic for a week or two. With no – or at least fewer – distractions, I can get a lot of writing done. However, the attic does have an internet connection, and one distraction I've been unable to resist is the live coverage of the Melody Amber chess tournament. The rapid and blindfold games are the perfect internet spectator sport – it's great when you can keep pace, even just for a move or two, with the world's elite. I watched Carlsen-Smeets live, but such is my chess memory that ...

Message: nootropil, I haven't yet found out why are you always so negative. Last time I advised you about accusations and I played a couple of games with you as well.
-What is your mission?
-Why do you always think the bad thing about others?
-If you don't like it here, why not play other places/sites.
When I was playing on ICC, my rating in standardgames, (longer timecontrols than 15 minutes per game) was about +2500, so it is not far from what I have here. I have allready explained in my thread above, why I left ICC.
But who cares about rating, you do apperently and why are you so upset about these things. Why not see the positive things in the good communitives we have here on Gameknot. Some place you wrote, that the only real chess is OTB chess, why are you playing here then???
Of course I totally disagree with your statement about OTB chess, especially when we speak about Bullet/Blitz chess, which after my opinion has little to do with chess, but others love that and I respect that, as well as you should respect that we are some there love CC-games.
Best wishes

——— A Master of Slow Chess Who’s a Speed Demon, Too — The best chess players in the world are ranked on their ability to play slow, or classical, chess, in which each side has at least a few hours for a game. None of them are slouches at blitz chess, in which an entire game lasts five minutes or less, but it puts a premium on tactical skill and quick thinking — which is usually the forte of younger chess players. So it is not surprising that Magnus Carlsen, 19, who is the No. 1-ranked player in the world in classical chess, and 22-year-old Hikaru Nakamura, No. 17, look to be the best in the world at blitz chess. Carlsen, a Norwegian, is the reigning world blitz champion, having won the title in November at a tournament in Moscow. Carlsen beat ...

Message: I play here, on playchess.com (because I own Frizt 7 I can play there for free) and I use to play on Kasparovchess.com before it died. I am also frustrated with the large amount of blitz games. I hear that the Free Internet Chess Server is quite good. www.freechess.org/
But I don't think it's uncalled for to pay for a service. I pay for Mig's newletter at www.chessninja.com and I just transferred cash to my paypal account to pay for a GameKnot registration. If you receive good product value and good customer service I think you're morally obligated to pay something for that experience.
