Subject: Opening MISTAKES: common/specific aor TRAPS :

Message:
I hope some other players will step up and help out with this thread. Playing much blitz & ten minute Chess lately I see some mistakes repeatedly, so just want to point out some of them to be avoided.
So any frequent mistakes you are seeing, Please post if you will. And I'd like to include any "Traps" anyone wants to share. Regards, Craig A.C.
(While I wont declare all these certainly "lost", they certainly give the edge or more to the other player. Uh, and they probably ARE lost vs Kasparov, Anand or Kramnik. Probably even Leko! -grin-

Some mistakes vs 1.e4 openings :

Message:
Scotch Game 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nxd4 ? and WT gets advantage after 5.Qxd4
I've heard players state they believed this good for black with the idea that the Queen should not be moved early or it will be subject to harrassment. Often that's a good general rule. But not here. The queen is not weak; it is strong and centralized! In a position where BL does not have many minor pieces left to kick the Queen with. And a move like ...c5 to do it gains him nothing but a weak d5 square. Common moves here that work better:
4... (Bc5/Nf6/even Qf6 or Qh5 or even the somewhat passive but solid...d6)
For EG after 4...Bc5 then if 5.Nc6 most common is bxc6 and to play for later ...d5 using the c6 jpawns support. But also 5.Nxc6 Qf6!? threatening 6....Qxf2 can recover then by 6....Qxc6.
****
Center Game: For some reason Fritz has played this but its not good:
1.e4 e5 2.d4 d5 ? Trust me.
****
REALLY BAD IS:
1.e4 e5 2.d4 f6 ? 3.dxe5 fxe5 ?? 4.Qh5+ and if Either 4...g6 or Ke7 5.Qxe5+ is just tooo painful for BL.
***
Then there is Diamano's Opening: Some will keep playing it anyway, but its "difficult" for BL after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6? 3. Nxe5! or even the natural 3.Bc4!?
Trust me
*******
A Trap: Sicilian Dragon
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd4 4.Nd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.f4 Bg7? (correct is Nc6 first here)
7.e5 dxe5 8.fxe5 now the Worst for BL is Ng4?? 9.Bb5+ and BL drops a piece, or a Queen with worst play. It continues either: 8....Ng4?? 9.Bb5+ Bd7 10.Qxg4! because the Bd7 is pinned and cannot recapture on g4. But even worse is:
8....Ng4 9.Bb5+ Kf8 ??? 10.Ne6+ ! fxe6 11.Qxd8+Kf7 12.o-o+ Bf6 13.Qxh8
and things are lookin BAD!! [:-)

Damiano's Defense

Message:
While not strong, the mistake is not 2... f6, but 3... fxe5. The correct defense is 3... Qe7 4. Nf3 Qxe4+, which wins back the pawn.

For Top Seeds, No Guarantee of Victory, or Success — In a sport like tennis, it is not unusual to see a top seed win a tournament. But in chess, the margin between a No. 1 seed and most of the field is often small, and the top chess player is usually not the prohibitive favorite. Three chess tournaments that ended last weekend illustrated that rule, and the exceptions. The British Chess Championships was won by Michael Adams, who has been one of the top chess players in the world for 15 years and was in the Top 10 as recently as three years ago. When the tournament began, Adams outranked his nearest competitor by 150 rating points, which is more than a whole class better. He finished 1.5 points ahead of the No. 2 seed — a margin ...

Alejandro Ramirez wins US Open — Chess Grandmaster Alejandro Ramirez of Costa Rica won the 111th U.S. Open in Irvine last Sunday. Ramirez, a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas, yielded draws only to top-seeded GM Varuzhan Akobian and his former UTD teammate, IM Julio Catalino Sadorra. His 8-1 score included a victory against GM Melikset Khachiyan and a crucial eighth-round upset of GM Alexander Shabalov. Akobian, Sadorra, Shabalov and 14-year-old chess phenom Daniel Naroditsky shared second place at 7 1/2-1 1/2. Southern Californians Khachiyan, IM Andranik Matikozyan, IM Enrico Sevillano, masters Joel Banawa, Matthew Beelby, Ankit Gupta and Bryan Williams Paulsen and top expert Vanessa West ...

Hats off to Gata Kamsky — The US chess champion Gata Kamsky triumphed in style to capture the Grenke Leasing World Rapid Chess Championship at Mainz. The 36 year-old scored 10/11 against mainly world class opposition. Kamsky wore his favourite New York cap throughout the event and it obviously brought him luck. Kamsky was one of a dozen chess players on 5/5 after day one. He reeled off four more wins, defeating world number five Levon Aronian with black and Sergey Karjakin with white thanks to a deep queen sacrifice. In round nine he needed a little luck to defeat Rustam Kazimdzhanov with black and then drew with Vugar Gashimov. In the last round he managed to hold the draw, after a bit of a struggle, with ...

An Annual Generational Clash Is Underway — Chess was once an old man’s game, but that has not been true for many years. Now, chess is a young man’s game and in any contest between chess players of different ages, the younger ones are often the favorites. Still, that does not diminish the intrigue of any clash of generations, which is why the NH Tournament in the Netherlands has become so popular. Now in its fifth year, the chess tournament pits a group of younger players (“rising stars”) against a group of older players (“experience”). Each competitor in one group plays each of the competitors in the other group — a format called a Scheveningen System after the Dutch city where it was first used. In addition to fighting for ...

Hou Wins Fifth Women’s Chess Grand Prix — It was a perfect final round match-up, but Antoaneta Stefanova was not able to pull off her dream finish. Stefanova, a Bulgarian chess grandmaster and former women’s world chess champion, trailed Hou Yifan of China by half a point before the last round of the fifth Women’s Grand Prix in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. The only way for Stefanova to win the chess tournament was to beat Hou. But she only drew, so Hou finished first with 8 points, while Stefanova was second with 7.5. Afterward, in an interview on the tournament’s Web site, Stefanova said of the final game, “I do not know if I could play better, maybe I did not find right moves, especially in queen endgame. I must note that my ...

aqeel Thanks for contributing that great trap site! The quantity there is overwhelming. About your computer problem; I got there fine by pasting only this part:
geocities.com/lifemasteraj/chess_traps.html
My Explorer just puts in the " http:// " part automatically, and it took me there No Problem. Have you tried it without the http part. Nothing disappeared on mine.
