...Collister!!!

Allow me to be the first to publicly congratulate our own ccmcacollister for having several of his old postal games added to the Chesslab database (go to -> www.chesslab.com and search for "Collister" in the pre-1991 section). You can see him in all sorts of action, ranging from Dutchin' it up with correspondence GM Ian Brooks to smacking a guy around with the white side of the Smith-Morra. Very entertaining.

I'm sure, given the high caliber of competitors here at GK, that Craig's not the only one with such a claim to posterity. But nevertheless I think it's worth a hearty congratulations--think of it, a hundred years from now someone will be pushing wood, run some thoughts through his database, and see Craig's name come up alongside a crusher of a move. And he'll say, "I don't know who this Collister fellow was, but he played a mean game of chess."

Finding a draw against a pair of queens — It's never easy to face a brace of queens. But can black find an answer here? Kramnik-Gashimov, Melody Amber 2010. Black to play. RB It's never exactly a comfort to find yourself facing a brace of queens, but at least they're as far from the defence of their own king as it's possible to get, and that king is exposed. Also, as long as the black queen can keep an eye on f8 neither enemy queen can give check on the next move. So there may be a chance for a draw. Three possible moves suggest themselves: 1...Qxg3, Ne1 and 1...Qf1+. 1...Qxg3 looks tempting – the threat is 2...Nf2 mate – but it has the rather obvious and slightly fatal drawback of ...

After checking out those Craig's nice games, I checked my own and found that they had quite a few of my games, though as usual 6 of my games were credited to a GM with the same last name, lots had just my initial and one just my last name, and one had the result reversed (hint: no, I did not get mated with White vs. the Alekhine in 28 moves <grin>). I finally decided to let the database operator know about the errors even though it added two embarassing losses vs. 2280 players to my name 'cause it also added two wins and a draw vs. IM's.

Hard Times for Chess — Early last week, Silvio Danailov, the manager of Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, said in an interview that the M-Tel Masters would not be played this year because the main sponsor, after which the chess tournament is named, had pulled out. Instead, the company decided that it would get more for its money by sponsoring Topalov in his upcoming world chess championship match against Viswanathan Anand of India, the titleholder. Danailov said that he hoped that the chess tournament, which is usually held in May, would return next year. The world chess championship match begins on April 23 in Sofia, Bulgaria. M-Tel was first played in 2005, so it does not have a long tradition, but ...

as a great Petroff advocate once said.
Thanks Jeff, for the great thread. And to everyone here.
And you Have got me very interested to find games from more GK'ers on this d-base and others. (I wish more people gave their name, but still bet there are quite a number to be found.) So I want to take a look at that.
fmgaijin I understand! It appears my Cote loss is incomplete too. I definately remember sending him an IF move. A 3 or 4 move combination starting with a Rook sac and ending with I RESIGN! But that is all missing. Probably just as well, being well busted where it Does end.
Just done writing to fmgaijin and looking up his games; I found not only can he be confused with one GM, but yet an earlier one has but one letter difference in his name plus the same initial. And another 2400+ player is now entering the scene to perhaps make for later confusion. On the otherhand, having ones play being easily confused with 2 GM's is not the worst thing one could suffer in Chess! :)
tertsius That's Clai'amore ! You gots to have the accent on it! Thanks tho for pointing to the real power behind the board. Having a Mrs. who plays Chess is a special blessing !!
Thanks everyone ... Regards, Craig AC }8-)

In Chicago, a Chess Tournament That Turns Out Grandmasters — In 1993, Laszlo Nagy began organizing monthly chess tournaments in Budapest that give players a chance to earn the norms needed to gain the grandmaster and international master titles. Called the First Saturday tournaments, the events have attracted many of the world’s best chess players. Five years ago, a Chicago man created a similar tournament series, the North American Masters, to help American chess players. The man, Sevan A. Muradian, organized the first one in April 2005. The 25th tournament ended March 24, and two players, Mackenzie Molner and Siddharth Ravichandran, each earned the third norm needed to become international masters ...
