10/20/2005 20:01:01 Play online chess | Subject: Fischer's return????
Message: An interesting thought was put forth by pawntificator in the "Greatest player of all time" thread. Anyone else think that the mighty Fischer makes one last stand? If so, I wonder who would play him, and why? I, for one, would love to see him make an attempt to regain what was once his. The real question, I think, is who would be the first to tangle with him? Knowing RJF's penchant for the shocking, he would probably demand an immediate shot at the title with no preliminaries (to be played in a swimming pool while wearing cowboy hats while having a Taiwanese literature professor read Faust as the fans throw barracudas into the water). Anybody think he returns?????

My source is the "Sofia News Agency". Here is the link! Reading the short article, it appears that Topalov is possibly interested in taking Fischer up on his challenge.

Matt ——— Chess still struggling to capture imagination of the masses in China — China is a unique phenomenon in world chess. The team only began to compete in around 1970 but within 30 years was a serious contender at men's level and No1 in women's chess. Yet the national game remains Chinese chess and the global version has little public support. The secret has been well-directed government backing to identify young talent and provide intensive coaching. China will be going for medals again at next month's world team Olympiad in Russia, although the home squad will be heavy favourites. China has also created its own elite chess tournament at Nanjing, where the top two finishers qualify for a Grand Slam final against world chess champion Vishy Anand and world No1 ...

Or just a promotional thing. ——— Rising Chess Stars Open up a Lead at NH Tournament — The saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link is also true for chess teams. Unfortunately for the older team at the annual NH Tournament in the Netherlands, it seems to have three weak links right now. After seven rounds, the rising stars lead the experience team 19 to 16. The top chess player for the experience team, Boris Gelfand of Israel, is actually playing very well. He has scored 5 points — the most in the competition. Peter Svidler of Russia is playing beneath his ability, but he still has 3.5 points. But the other three experience members — Peter Heine Nielsen of Denmark, Loek Van Wely of the Netherlands and Ljubomir Ljubojevic of Serbia — each have only 2.5 points. That is ...

So were Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand, the current world chess champion. It used to be that the world junior championship was an important stepping stone for chess players who had dreams of becoming the best in the world. No longer. While the junior championship, which is open to participants 20 years old or younger, still draws talented chess players, the best of them usually skip the event because they are already among the world’s elite. Over the last few weeks we have concentrated on the technical precision of endings, and by contrast we now move to a much messier phase of the game of chess – the middlegame and, more specifically, attacking. Often, the knack in playing a successful attack is finding an idea that throws your opponent off balance. Subsequent analysis might prove the idea unsound – in recent years that has frequently happened, with every master move scrutinised by strong computer chess programmes. But so what? Message: But do you think there's a market for Fischer playing Peter Svidler? I realize you were just stating your opinion, but even for chess enthusiasts, I don't think Svidler really gets anybody excited. If you're just stating your personal preference, then that's one thing, but if you seriously think Svidler would be the best draw, I think you'd be mistaken. Of course, the possibility of a Fischer return is so minute that everybody here is probably wasting their time in even writing of one.

6 straight wins coming into the candidate matches, then Fisher -Taimanov 6-0
Fischer-Larsen 6-0 ,,then he won the 1st game vs Petrosian =19 straight wins. In the 2nd Petro game he lost then went on to win 6,5-2,5. When he played Spassky, got a little crazy in the beginning ,then composed himself and dispateched him by 12.5-8.5 ..that even though neglecting to show up in the 2nd game he gave Spassky had a 2-0 lead!

Message: I'm sorry coyote, but hating a group of people is not the same as slashing somebody's throat (He was convicted in civil case). If somebody wants to feel/speak a certain way, even if its wrong, they have every right to do so as as long as they do not infringe on another's rights to live, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness(US standard). I am not an anti-semite, but I am anti-political-correctness. In the words of French philosopher Voltaire, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." I personally feel that his eccentricity has absolutely nothing to do with the game of chess. We don't elect the grandmasters of the world to represent the chess community; they arise due to an extraordinary skill.

Message: "hating a group of people is not the same as slashing somebody's throat" True, but you missed the point. The point is, if you are an advertisor, would you want your porduct/service associated with Fischer. He cannot make a lot of money if nobody will put up the money. As I said earlier, Mel Gibson was a great actor, but since his "Passion" you do not see him anymore. No major studio wants to be assocated with him. He did not kill anyone either.
If Fischer wants one last stand, he will have to pay his entry fees and win tourneys just like you and I can.

Message: about advertisers being sensitive to controversy is certainly true. However, I don't doubt that there are any number of rich individual chess fans who would spring for a large enough prize fund. Fischer's anti-Semetic, anti-US predilictions were already well-known when the second Fischer-Spassky match was held and there was money raised back then. His antics then and thereafter only corroborated was was already evident.
Mel Gibson isn't a particularly good example of what you're trying to show, however, Coyote. A quick Google search shows that ABC has him directing a TV film about the holocaust. In addition, he's directing an adventure-type film in Mexico based on an script about the decline of Mayan culture.

Message: Do that same Google search and see the difference in his career pre and post "Passion". He was a top 5 box office actor for how many straight years before, making over $50,000,00 a movie........ and in the toilet ever since. Correct? Just a coincindence that now he is behind the camera for a made-for-TV movie?

1/04/2006 13:01:50 Play online chess | Well, this is painfully off-topic,
Message: (and I can't believe I'm taking the Mel Gibson's side in this!) but we must have different Googles. Forbes has him as #3 in their 2005 Top 100 Celebrity list, down from #1 last year. Four months ago, Entertainment Weekly described him as the most powerful man in Hollywood: "'Gibson's religious film made more than $610 million and prompted international debates, making it one of the greatest "power plays" in Hollywood history'" With annual Easter reissues, the expectation is that it will easily gross over a billion and could surpass "Titanic's" $1.8 billion.
I think Gibson's age, the desire to be behind the camera and to have artistic control have more to do with his decision-making than any blow-back from the anti-Semetic controversy.
What follows is from a July, '05 rewrite of a Daily Variety story on the new Mayan flick, "Apocolypto":
"the latest epic that will be fully financed by Gibson's Icon Productions - Hollywood's hottest production property following the runaway success of "Passion". The stunning success and profits produced by the film instantly made Gibson very wealthy and powerful in movie circles, giving him a new influence that Variety compared to that of "Star Wars" creator George Lucas.
"By financing the new picture exclusively through Icon Productions, Gibson maintains full control of the project.
"Walt Disney Co won the competition to distribute "Apocolypto" - which is a Greek term meaning "an unveiling" or "new beginning" - in North America, while Icon Productions will circulate it in the rest of the world. Entertainment giant Disney had to agree to stringent distribution terms set by Gibson in order to win the US and Canadian rights for the film, Variety said."
All that said, I agree with you that Fischer's anti-Semetic rants and his legal troubles rule out any meaningful corporate sponsership of a match he might agree to. It would have to be sponsered by one or more individuals.

Message: Having just finished reading Kasparov's 'My Great Predecessors' Part 4 - Fischer. Kasparov believes that Karpov would have been a difficult opponent indeed, however I believe 1n 1975, Fischer was still extremely strong and would probably have retained the title, as if you remember, Karpov only just got past Victor Korchnoi, who Fischer would have beaten far more easier. I think Karpov did not reach his true potential until around 1980.
