Message: Did I implement a true Zwischenzug w/ move 30...Qe4+ instead of just 30....Rxc1+?

Message: i would say so.
looks like an in-between move to me. 30...Qe4+ comes between as a bit of a surprise to your opponent, instead of the natural 30...Rxc1.
but when 31...Rxc1 comes a move later it has greater effect - it wins a whole rook because the king cannot recapture.

Message: ok, I wasn't sure. thanx:) ——— 2011 Tal Memorial — I am reporting from the 2011 Tal Memorial, held Nov. 16-26 in Moscow. I am also 10 hours later than my St. Louis readers, so that means I am reporting from the future! The Tal Memorial is named after Mikhail Tal, the eighth World Chess Champion and a Soviet chess legend. This prestigious event features 10 chess players, all grandmasters, in a round-robin format, and this field is quite possibly the strongest of any chess tournament, ever. The players in the event, and their rating/world rank according to FIDE, the World Chess Federation, are as follows: Magnus Carlsen: 2826 (1), Viswanathan Anand: 2811 (2), Levon Aronian: 2802 (3), Vladimir Kramnik: 2800 (4), Vassily Ivanchuk ...

Message: I'm not so sure about your final move being a zwischenzug, exactly, since it is an integral part of your concluding sequence. However, your 17th ...Qxg5+! does have an 'in between' look about it, rather than the immediate 17...Bxe4. What gives it its zwischenzug aesthetic is that the WQ can not save itself by blocking the check. Very neat! Cheers, Ion ——— Armenia's killer chess move — Bravo to the former Soviet republic for putting chess on the curriculum. But beware – this game is more compelling than life. I have diverted myself briefly from playing online chess to write this. I've been keeping a log of the games I've played this week, and they number more than 60. At some point in the last five years, mainly thanks to the fact that chess and the internet are made for each other, I became a chess obsessive. Those 64 squares in which a life-and-death battle are waged have become the cornerstone of my existence. In this, I like to think I am in good company. "Chess is my world," said the former Soviet world chess champion Mikhail Tal. "Not a house, not a fortress where I hide myself from life's hardship, but ...

Message: I'm not sure that a move in a clear mating attack, or a tactical manouvre would be correctly labled as zwischenzug - at least I would rather say that zwischenzug is a kind of a position where there's not necessarily a quick mating pattern, or a quick way to win material through a tactic, but the situation is such that while nothing may immediately lose to a tactic, the opponent has no available move that would improve - or even avoid worstening his position.
——— Armenia makes chess compulsory in schools — Authorities say teaching pastime to primary school children is about building character, not breeding future chess champions. Tiny Armenia is a big player in world chess, and a new gambit could make it even bigger: mandatory chess in school. The former Soviet nation has made the game part of the primary school curriculum along with such standards as maths and history for children between the ages of seven and nine. Chess is a national obsession in this country of 3 million people tucked away in a corner between Turkey and Iran. The passion was fostered in modern times by the exploits of chess champion Tigran Petrosian, who won the world chess championship in 1963 and successfully defended his title three years ...

10/28/2005 13:02:11 Play online chess | Zwischenzug... or zugszwang?
Message: I suspect mightytiny might be describing the latter. A zwischenzug is a move that comes between one move and its (apparently) logical response. E.g. I make a capture, but my opponent does not make the immediate recapture, but makes another move to which I must respond (!)(which is why it is often a check), before reverting to the recapture. Often this zwischenzug improves the effect of the recapture. Seen in this light, in pinkusmartyrus's game, Black's move 17 and move 30 can be termed zwischenzugen (what the plural for zwischenzug??). Cheers, Ion ——— On Chess: Underdog Israelia threat to Anand — Boris Gelfand, an Israeli chess grandmaster born in the former Soviet republic of Belarus, has had a singular career. In 21 years of tournament play, excelling at both traditional and rapid chess, he has won, finished second or tied for second in 43 of 52 tournaments. Yet he hasn’t been able to gain the title of world chess champion. Seeming to improve with age, Gelfand achieved his best result in 2007 when he tied for second with the then-reigning world chess champion, Vladimir Kramnik. The world title tournament was won by Viswanathan Anand, who remains world chess champion. In the spring, Gelfand will square off with Anand in a match for the title. Gelfand stands in sharp contrast to his ...

Thanks for correcting me... had a little brain hickup there. :) ——— Masters of the Game and Leaders by Example — Fewer than 2 percent of the 47,000 members of the United States Chess Federation are masters — and just 13 of them are under the age of 14. Among that select group of prodigies are three black players from the New York City area — Justus Williams, Joshua Colas and James Black Jr. — who each became masters before their 13th birthdays. “Masters don’t happen every day, and African-American masters who are 12 never happen,” said Maurice Ashley, 45, the only African-American to earn the top title of grandmaster. “To have three young players do what they have done is something of an amazing curiosity. You normally wouldn’t get something like that in any city of any race.” The chess federation, the game’s ...

Interesting question. Wish the library didnt repo my Oxford Chess Companion. I've always thought of zwishenzug being when a capture has been made and instead of
directly recapturing a different move is made that allows the recapture to be returned to after it. Qe4+ certainly looks like one.
Well done }8-)

10/28/2005 16:40:01 Play online chess | All German words
Message: The only German chess-word I knew so far was "Blitz" (= lightning), now this amount increased by 200%!
"Zugzwang" (force to move) is pronounced TSOOGTSVUNG and means that you dont want to do anything (make a move) but you must, and this "must" makes things worse (very important in endgames). It is used in politics as well, a decision has to be made - but no matter what it is, you are already aware about the disadvantages.
"Zwischenzug" (move between) is pronounced TSVISHENTSOOG and was perfectly described by ionadowman. The plural is "Zwischenzge", but I dont know an English word to describe the sound of "" (turkey would be wrong, this is close to the "").
Similar to "Zugzwang" in German other chess-words are also used in non-chess-environment (often politics):
"Zeitnot" (time trouble),
"Bauernopfer" (pawn-sacrifice),
"Hngepartie" (interrupted game to be continued later),
"Patt" (stale-mate),
and "Matt" (mate), of course!

Message: Thanks alberlie and misato for the info! :-) I had half an idea afterwards that the 'n' shouldn't be there, and I having seen the word for 'move' written 'zueg', thought an umlaut might possibly be in order. Message: punkusmartyrus, may I ask what happened to your rating around March this year? I have seen it a few times where players with a normal rating drops to ratings as low as 600, was there something wrong with the elo system? You seemed to be losing too many points when you were playing higher rated players.
