Subject: timeouts

Message:
Does it tick anyone else off? i have just won 2 team games cos my opponent timed out after 15 & 16 moves, i probably had a very slight edge with the white pieces & a slightly greater advantage with black.

I know it is not always easy to make your moves in the required time, but you have the option of a postponement. Like probably a lot of others on the site am trying different moves and openings, & i would prefer to play the game to a conclusion win lose or draw!

To time out in a team game seems even odder.

Okay i will stop ranting now!!

I agree dave,

When an opponent times out in a team match, although your team gets the points, it is still difficult to avoid feeling thwarted. Timing out in team matches is so sad in my opinion it's almost a tragedy. I can understand why some teams will not tolerate it at all.

Timeouts

Message:
It seems to me ordinary courtesy that people offer some sort of explanation or apology for 'timing out'. It can be inadvertent, e.g. forgetting which time control is in operation, say, or one's machine being u/s for too long. That sort of thing is forgivable. But I form the impression that it's being used simply to withdraw from a game. I've noticed tho' that opponents have withdrawn from games in which neither they nor I have had any discernable advantage... Can't think why. I've not observed any appreciable diminution of their GK activity, though... ):-(

The Scotch Opening, part 3: the Kasparov approach — The former world champion was responsible for a revival of interest in the chess opening. But how does he exploit it here? More on the Scotch. Garry Kasparov was responsible for its revival. Here he finds his e-pawn under pressure. What should he play? RB There are so many possibilities that I'm going to have to go through a process of elimination. We can discard the obvious hara-kiri options of 1 cxd5 and 1 exf6 Qb4+. Nor does 1 f4 fxe5 2 fxe5 Qg5 look particularly appealing. 1 Bg2 looks like it just loses a pawn and gives Black all the play after 1...fxe5 2 0-0, and 1 e6 is just bad. Nor do 1 Nd2, 1 Kd1 and 1 Ba3 solve the problem. That leaves ...

I am

one of the guilty parties when it comes to timeouts, team games and others. There are circumstances which mean I don't get the chance to postpone games and, to be honest on those occasions, logging on to GK to postpone is the last thing on my mind. If you look at my profile I have a very high % timeouts, all due to the same situation. I have been a member of 2 teams and felt very badly every time I timed out on a team game. For that reason I resigned from my last team and will not join another until my situation settles. Please do not judge all people with high timeout rates badly, some of us do have a genuine reason.

Russia return to form after slump — Russia, with a new-look young chess team, recovered from an early setback against Greece and won the World Team Chess Championship at Bursa, Turkey. The result eases the pressure on Moscow chess officials whose once invincible squad failed to justify top seeding in the last three Olympiads. The United States, without their No2, Gata Kamsky, took silver and India, missing the world chess champion, Vishy Anand, won bronze, both fine performaces. But the show stealer was this week's spectacular brilliancy, which helped the 22-year-old US chess champion to the individual top board gold medal. Boris Gelfand had planned the sharp opening and ...

I have never timed out in my 950 games because I always put up a vacation flag if there's the slightest chance I won't get to my computer on time. I can be more understanding of people who don't have reliable Internet connection, or those who don't live near a public library where they can go in case of computer failure, but I still contend it's not hard to avoid timing out.

Magnus and Hikaru -- the Ali-Frazier of Chess? — ... But I can't tell you I've ever been more excited about a game than one that lasted five-and-a-half hours Thursday and ended in a tie. The sport was chess. If in everyday conversation you throw around terms like "zugzwang'' and "pawn island,'' you would have found the 59-move contest riveting. But even if you don't, the storyline was irresistable. Playing the white pieces was Hikaru Nakamura, the reigning U.S. chess champion and at 22, perhaps America's best hope for capturing the world title. On the other side of the chess board was Magnus Carlsen, the 19-year-old Norwegian phenom who is now the top rated chess player in the world. Both are brilliant grandmasters on the rise. Each ...
