Message: Hello. I'm trying to get some tactics collections to go over to improve my game. Since my main goal is otb play, ideally I would like to view the positions from my fritz which has a 3d feature. Is this possible and does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks

Message: Not to sound bitter, but I posted a bunch of tactics links like a month ago, a post which received exactly zero attention. I therefore post them again, because boy is this a useful thing.
This site -> dejascacchi.altervista.org has links to .pdf files for 3000+ FREE tactics problems and 3000+ FREE "best move" problems. One of the nice things about these sets is that, in the vast majority of cases, they have been taken from actual OTB games instead of being constructed around a theme.
If you want the tactical problems in PGN format, you can download them directly from this link -> www.cmpgo.de . You should be able to feed these directly into Fritz and get moving. In the alternative, you can go here -> www.cmpgo.de and download a program that (while primarily designed to access a German chess server) has these tactical exercises built directly in.
I've been working through the tactical problems for the past few weeks, and have found them extremely valuable.

Message: I'm not sure if this will help you or not , but I think it is very useful.CTS is the Chess Tactics Server and this is a quote from the site:
"Currently 23,803 tactical chess problems with a degree of difficulty ranging from trivial to ambitious are provided to be solved against the clock. Your tactical performance will be measured by the Glicko rating system. The problems are rated too.
You can sign in completely anonymous as guest to get familiar with the chess board interface, browse some problems or just look around.
If you managed to slove the problem in three SECONDS your rating will increase , and within 10 sec will increase also but not the same as 3 sec.Anyhow you can examine all prolems as a guest.
If interested, you'll just need a valid email address to register and join our community. "
The team work there provide a very good statistical studies about the problems and the players , and I think that the high rated problems there worth a look.
This is a link for the site: -> chess.emrald.net
——— Carlsen Sprints Ahead at King's Tournament — With a little good fortune, Magnus Carlsen is on a tear. Carlsen, the top seed, won his third game in a row at the King’s Chess Tournament in Romania on Sunday. This time, his victim was Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine, who was winning for most of the game. But then he blundered (23 Rf2? instead of 23 Kh1) allowing Carlsen to turn the tables. He was also a bit fortunate in Round 5, on Saturday, when he beat Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu of Romania. In that game, Nisipeanu had a small advantage, but Carlsen employed a nice feint and Nisipeanu took the bait (17 Qd5, he should have played 17 Nd5), after which his position was very difficult. Carlsen, a Norwegian, now has 4.5 points and ...

Not for addictive personalities! ——— A Player Steps Up His Game and Wins the National Open — Chess players often talk of the creative aspect of chess — the role of imagination in conceiving strategies. Sometimes the desire to execute an original plan can overwhelm even the desire to win. Mikhail Tal, a former world chess champion, wrote in his autobiography that he had lost more than a few games because he had chosen a “beautiful” combination, only to discover that he had miscalculated. To borrow a baseball metaphor, a grand slam for a chess player would be to play brilliantly, win the game and defeat a strong opponent when there is a lot riding on the outcome. That is what Timur Gareev of Uzbekistan did in the final round of the National Open in Las Vegas last Sunday. He trailed ...

Message: Indeed a nice site, but not really suited for me. After one session my rating dropped to 1100. The first timer is usually already gone, before I know whose turn it is. The problems are very easy, but those times are so quick, that I can't seem to prevent going down even though all my answers are right. This makes it a bit frustrating. ——— Timur Gareyev wins US National Open — Timur Gareyev, an Uzbek chess grandmaster who attends the University of Texas in Brownsville, won the US National Open last weekend in Las Vegas. Gareyev yielded a first-round draw to IM Joe Bradford of Texas but won his next five games. He was particularly tough on Southern Californians, inflicting defeats on IM Andranik Matikozyan and, in the final round, GM Varuzhan Akobian. Tied for second at 5-1 were Akobian and GMs Arthur Kogan (Israel), Alex Lenderman (New York) and Alejandro Ramirez (Costa Rica). Matikozyan tied for sixth at 41/2-11/2. There were 19 GMs in the 105-player Open section. Two Southern Californians, Danyul Lawrence and 12-year-old Michael W. Brown, shared ...

Message: Bucklehead are you the one who posted the "predator at the chessboard" link? I've been going through the whole book ever since, very useful.
I tried the cts server but like naamloos I find the time much too fast, I can't even take in the position before I miss the problem.
Can anyone give a quick explanation of how to feed pgn's into chessbase programs?
Thanks! ——— Carlsen and Radjabov Take the Lead of the Kings Chess Tournament — Three decisive games in Round 4 of the 4th Kings Chess Tournament in Romania rejiggered the standings. Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu of Romania and Boris Gelfand of Israel, the co-leaders after Round 3, both lost, while Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan won his second game in a row and Magnus Carlsen of Norway won his first. They now lead with 2.5 points, a half point ahead of Nisipeanu, Gelfand and Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine. Wang Yue of China, the other competitor, sits alone in last place with one point. Two of Thursday’s games began with surprising chess opening choices. Nisipeanu, who was Black against Ponomariov, chose the Blumenfeld Counter Gambit, a chess opening that ...

Message: I tried the chess tactics server. One of my problems were just wrong and it took a while before I realized who it was that should move and that it's not mate in 5 situations but it's the best move. Good luck finding "the best" move on a loaded board in 3 seconds, 2 seconds if you're counting on how long it takes to click and move a piece. And with that, be sure to realize that sometimes you start in check!

——— Bobby Fischer’s Body Ordered to Be Exhumed — Wednesday, Iceland’s Supreme Court ordered that the body of Bobby Fischer, the former chess champion, be disinterred to determine if he is the father of Jinky Young, a 9-year-old Philippines girl, according to a report by Agence France-Presse. Fischer died in January 2008 and was buried in Iceland, his adopted home, in the cemetery of Laugardaelir Church. Since his death, there has been an ongoing fight over his estate involving competing claims by Marilyn Young, Jinky’s mother; Miyoko Watai, the head of the Japanese Chess Association, who said ...

Message: I have to take that back. First you get 3 seconds to watch your opponent act (which I didn't get, just thought it was badly controlled) then you get to act. I reached 1500 before I quit. Quite entertaining.
