15 ( +1 | -1 ) 10 Most Eccentric Chessplayers...?I got to thinking along there lines the other day; the most eccentric or interesting personalities among Chessplayers?! The start of my own list follows: How about you?
84 ( +1 | -1 ) My incomplete "Ten" , in no particular order..for the most part. 1> RJF ... nuff said ! :) 2> Steinitz ... for calling overseas without a telephone 3> Nimzovich ... for ignoring a Chess collegue for years, thinking him an adherant of Tarrasch. 4> Em. Lasker ... No, not for Capa match-related stuff. For Wardrobe & demeanor. 5> Einstein ... For having Lasker to play, but continuing with mathematics & physics for entertainment. 6> Victors Pupils ... What an interesting name! But he's here for Chess style & openings. 7> Pal Benko !! For actually "Doing" "For the good of The Game"! The ultimate sacrifice of his interzonal spot given to RJF, leading to a new WC and the entire Fischer/Golden Age of American Chess popularity. May it never be forgotten! Remember Benko. Buy his Book if you can. 8> Kmoch ... For inventing a new Chess Language (which no one speaks.) 9>Alekhine ... for staying home to eat meat by hand, and choking to death ?! 10> Reshevesky ... Perpetual motion machine of Chess !? (I've heard but not seen).
51 ( +1 | -1 ) You forgot:Rubenstein and his imaginary fly, Morphy for never cutting the apron strings,Blackburne for physically assaulting opponents, showing up crocked for many games(ditto:Mason),Mason for playing under an asssumed name all his life. But I must ask you ccmcacollister-just what was wrong with Lasker's wardrobe or demeanor? Just because he smoked lousy cigars during play... And finally,it's Pupols, not Pupils. Master of the Latvian Gambit, and the only player Fischer ever lost on time to.
70 ( +1 | -1 ) Here's my 2 cents:1. Bobby Fischer for.... Don't even wanna go through it.
2. Kasparov & Karpov for creating some of the most dramatic and spectacular chess ever. really showing that chess is a fight. For example 1985 when the WC was cancelled because FIDE president Campomanes. It was claimed that the players were too exhausted, though they were themselves willing to continue.
3. Deep Blue. I know it's not a human but it's close to... The match between it and Kaspy was one show of it's own. For those who weren't alive in 1972 this must be the closest comparison to Fischer- Spassky and a good one :)
I could add 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. But among the 3 first I don't think they can even get close. They would just be minor pieces :p
57 ( +1 | -1 ) Myway316Dear Tom (Had to check & make sure you weren't Victors Pupols, right :) And not sure its not Viktors either?! I LIKE his play. Just did not understand it as a kid. Being on this list is a badge of honor to me. Of course, I may be a little eccentric.
Lasker ... Did I day anything was Wrong with his Wardrobe or Demeanor? But admit it, doesn't every pic you,ve ever seen of Em manage to shout "grumpy old man" at you?! Did he and Albert ever figure out who lost the comb? (I Need it . 8-) Mason? Why I had a double Rook sac vs Mason in an OTB French, vs Exchange Var. You mean "Ed" right? Thanks for your additions there! ITs great game, eh?
129 ( +1 | -1 ) Most Eccentric, that would be me . I often put perfume on my chess pieces. Especially that black Queen ,she is a real stinker. I sometimes give that dirty white bishop a bath(the chess piece I mean)lol. I even been known to feed the white queen knight some oats but the little fellow refuses to eat oats! So I put him back on the board and let him gobble a few pawns and maybe a bishop or two. On a great day he gets to eat a Queen! Those lazy kings I have even took the felt off the bottom trying to speed them up but a dismal failure was the result. Why even with the threat of -OFF WITH YOUR HEAD- the lazy fellows continue at that Kingly leisure. And that sleepy king bishop pawn, why I once soaked it in coffee to just wake it up but to no avail. And me well I know that a good shampoo before a chess games does wonders. Even doing my fingernails has aided me . I once bought a new pair of shoes before a tournament and I swear those shoes whispered brilliant tactics to me during the game! Last time I was in a chess slump not only did I shampoo my head twice , I gave all three of my kittens a bath and shampoo too!! I do not remember how much it helped my chess but it did wonders for me!!!!--BBG
